CakeBoss Installation for Vista

Due to the way Vista's security settings are structured, the CakeBoss installation requires manual installation of Microsoft SQL Server Express

If you experience an error after installation, please check the Troubleshooting instructions at the bottom of this page.

Installing Microsoft SQL Server Express:

1. Go to here and download SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 (SQLEXPR32.EXE, 36.5 megs)

2. If it asks you for 'Authentication Mode' choose 'Mixed'

3. If it asks for a password, choose a password that's easy for you to remember.

4. It will ask you to add a user to the SQL Server Admin Role.  Add yourself as the administrator.

5. Then click 'finish'.

Installing CakeBoss

1. Set Internet Explorer to be your default browser.  If you always use IE, it's still a good idea to check. (If you use a different browser, you can go back to using it after installation is complete.) To change IE to default browser, open IE and click Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs -> Check box to tell IE to check. Then restart IE.

2.  Check to make sure you have all Microsoft’s latest high priority updates. Go to http://update.microsoft.com and click the “Express” button. Download and install all high priority updates.  If you have all your high priority updates, your screen will look like this.

3. Now you're ready for CakeBoss!  Go to  www.cakeboss.com/publish.htm and click 'Install', then 'Run'.

CakeBoss will ask for your key.  Copy and paste from your welcome email.

Vista Troubleshooting

If you get through these instructions, and run CakeBoss and get any kind of an error inside CakeBoss,  then the most likely cause of the problem is that you are not the administrator of your SQL database.    To easily fix this:

Go to your Start menu -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -> Configuration Tools -> SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. On that screen, click on 'Add New Administrator'. The screen that pops up will have a field for 'User to provision' and it should contain your computer's name and your username.  Move all the available privileges from the box on the left to the box on the right. Re-start CakeBoss and all should be working properly!
